You can sand them down and then use one of MinWax’s White Washing stains to get the look you want (or even Chalk Paint…I did a “Beach” sign and used new wood but made it look like “driftwood”). Unbelievable – it honestly, truely works. Olive oil and salt worked for me! I am using Bombay mahogany on a piece that is golden oak in colour. Placed a hand towel down on spot, had the iron on medium heat and rubbed it for about 8 seconds on the spot 3 times and it is completely gone. Amazing that the thing that caused the problem originally, was the remedy to fix it. Seems that that the low wind/hi heat setting would cause the least stress to the surface. I had one big heat stain and 2 small ones, and they’re almost gone now. Rub toothpaste into the spot, rinse with wet towel, dry and repeat until gone. This is an easy fix to get the look of a deeper or darker or even a different color stain without having to go through the process of sanding completely down to the bare wood and then staining and polying, etc. After doing this about 8 times, the stain completely disappeared! The big white spot was so intense that it almost looked like paint. I decided to iron back over the area with no steam in a circular motion. Love it!! Similar principle worked, back in the days, with the typewriter/computer printer ribbons — since ink was used only from the centre of the ribbon, spraying the roll of the ribbon with WD40 redistributed the ink — instant recharge of those ribbons. While setting out the table, a relative gave me a tip: for the scorch marks, just take an iron and apply heat to the cloudy stains, they’ll disappear! If you are after that look, then use straight product. I then wiped it down with oilve oil to remoisturize it and it is good as new!! I have a solid oak table and thought it was ruined. I lifted the towel and there was a slight white mark from the iron on the table (less opaque than the stains) I rubbed canola oil into the wood with the cloth and it seemed to disappear for the most part. On the highest setting I began pushing the steam button and iron right on the towel-directly over the stain (pizza boxes)on my cherrywood dinner table…. Repeat as needed.
